Free Spyware Detection - Forget James Bond, This is Serious by Paul Elms
Computer Slow? Annoying Pop-ups? You may want to
consider using one of the free spyware detection tools to see whether
your PC has been affected by spyware.
Many people have been educated about the security risks involved with
picking up a computer virus. And many of us now have anti-virus software
of our home computers, and if you have a PC at work it is almost certain
to have such software. But spyware? Talk to people in the street and I'm
sure you would get a lot of blank faces. And some people might even
venture to say, "Is it anything to do with James Bond?"
Spyware has nothing to do with 007. They are malicious computer programs
that can get onto your computer without your knowledge or consent. Once
there they can start recording information about you. For instance, what
personal documents are on your computer, what your passwords are and
where you surf on the Internet.
One of the commonest ways that these programs can get access to your
computer is by piggybacking on another programs that you download. Have
you ever downloaded a free computer program, music or shareware from the
Net? It may have been bundled with a spyware program.
Another way to become affected is by simply visiting the website of a
spyware author. The website is coded so that security holes in your
browser are exploited and a spyware program is downloaded to your
machine. This is one of the most frightening scenarios because you are
not even aware that your PC has become affected. And whereas some
spyware can produce pop up adverts that make you aware of its presence,
other programs just work silently in the background while you are
blissfully unaware of them.
Many people are turning to free spyware detection programs to find out
if there is a problem on their computer. This is one of the easiest ways
to protect yourself. It is quite easy to find these programs by doing
some research on the Net. But beware. As more people search for these
types of program there has been a corresponding increase in the number
of bogus programs made by scamsters. Some of these fraudulent products
claim to rid your computer of spyware, but are just plain ineffective.
Others are actually spyware themselves, so you could find yourself in an
even worse position than you were originally in.
What other steps can you take to protect yourself? In addition to using
your free spyware detection software you can make sure that any software
that you download from the Internet is from a trusted source. Downloads
from file sharing websites, and P2P websites are at high risk from
spyware so these should be avoided.
